Can TikTokers actually become musicians? Bella Poarch and her journey to musical fame.
Recently, the platform 'Tiktok' has become a creator's paradise, as content creators leap at the opportunity of stardom. You can find various trends posted every second, from dances to an endless amount of pop culture content. Of course, the popularity gives these 'Tiktok Stars' a platform and a well-established one too, so it isn't surprising when a transition from a fifteen-second dance to a 'major label signed' artist occurs.
Who is Bella Poarch?
One TikTok creator who made this leap recently, was Bella Poarch, who is a TikTok megastar with 80.4 million followers. She broke the Internet with her first single "Build a B*tch". She reached #1 on the global YouTube video charts and also earned the title of biggest debut for a new artist, with over 75 million views in 24 hours. Her song represents the repressive beauty standards people are forced under, crammed into a social standard which is impossible to achieve.
Her music video and song was received very well considering the records she has broken and how relevant the song remained for a long period of time. One leg up Bella has in the music industry is that she can actually sing and make music. She's even expressed her musical passion in previous TikToks, through her singing.
"Singing has always helped me get through anxiety, depression & PTSD. I stopped singing for a really long time because of something that happened to me a few years ago." – Bella's Instagram.
What TikTok got Bella recognized?
Before creating music, Bella was most known for her TikToks involving bizarre and cute facial expressions, which began her mass following during the "M to the B" worldwide trend. However, many saw this fame as problematic, as people believed Bella was doing the absolute bare minimum to achieve such a mass audience and following. However, looking at TikTok as a whole, isn't that what a large proportion of the creators do? Many remember Bella's old content, and always compare it to her new music, calling her lazy and not deserving her status.
Have you watched Inferno?
In Bella's most recent song "Inferno" she opens up about her sexual assault experiences in the past. In the music video, it shows two drunk men trying to take advantage of Bella. She explains how the song should be seen as a message for people to speak up about their previous experiences with sexual assault. Many fans supported her recent release and were respectful of her choice to come out with these previous traumas.
Although some believe Bella has faced controversy and doesn't deserve her fame, it's obvious that her change in career path has benefitted her in multiple ways. Perhaps we'll see a complete move from TikTok to music in the years to come? Or will she decide to keep uploading videos on TikTok?
Regardless, Bella deserves our full support with whatever she does!
