Excerpt (Ed Sheeran - 'Visiting Hours')

If you were following the behind-the-scenes of Ed Sheeran's upcoming album, you would already know who Michael Gudinski is and how close they were, and his new single 'Visiting Hours' only heartens the story!

Who was Michael Gudinski?

Gudinski was an Australian music industry icon, record company owner, and one of the country's most influential music promoter that was responsible for the touring behind The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Paul McCartney, etc. to name a few, who recently, at the age of 68, passed away in his sleep.

What was Sheeran's relationship with Michael?

Michael was more than just a touring promoter to the UK singer/songwriter.

We were, first and foremost, friends, he was a father figure and mentor to me, but also we enjoyed the peaks of our touring career together in 2018, breaking the record for most tickets sold in Australia.

Behind The Lines

'Visiting Hours' was written during quarantine when Sheeran was in Melbourne to attend the memorial services at the Rod Laver Arena.

The song's verses express how Ed wishes if Micahel was still around to meet his newly born daughter 'Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran' and reveals how cornerstone the mogul was to the 30-year-old's life.

"I wish that heaven had visiting hours

So I could just show up and bring the news

That she's getting older and I wish that you'd met her

The things that she'll learn from me

I got them all from you"

"I wish that heaven had visiting hours

So I could just swing by and ask your advice

What would you do in my situation? I haven't a clue how I'd even raise them

What would you do?

'Cause you always do what's right"

In the next verse, Ed also signals his fear of turning into a failure from all the paradigm shift and responsibilities he is facing now in life.

"Can we just talk a while until my worries disappear?

I'd tell you that I'm scared of turning out a failure"

Sheeran closes the song with a heartfelt message, personifying how Michaels's love towards Ed will be shared and passed on to his loved ones.

"And I will close the door, but I will open up my heart

And everyone I love will know exactly who you are

'Cause this is not goodbye, it is just 'til we meet again

So much has changed since you've been away"

After filming the video for the live version of 'Visiting Hours' in St Stephens Church, Hampstead, Sheeran shared a post on Instagram stating that the record was one of the most important songs on his upcoming album '=' and Thanking Kylie Minogue and Jimmy Barnes for sharing their voices in the backing vocals of the song.
